PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The proposed DART Underground provides the missing link that that will deliver a fully integrated rail network for the Greater Dublin Area, linking all modes of transport and ensuring that suburb to suburb, as well as suburb to city centre, journey's can be made by a frequent, high capacity public transport network. The DART Underground tunnels will be approximately 7.6 kilometres in length and will connect the Northern and Kildare rail lines, with underground stations strategically located at Spencer Dock, Pearse St, St. Stephen’s Green, Christchurch and Heuston Station, as well as a new surface DART station at Inchicore. The project is currently at an advanced planning stage

Traffic Engineering and Utility Design Services
Responsible for the highway element of the Reference Design required for the preparation of a Railway Order. Duties included the design of vehicular, pedestrian and cyclist access arrangements to all new stations, intervention shafts, operation control centre (OCC) and maintenance yard facilities.

The design included a new public transport interchange at Inchicore to serve buses, cyclists and pedestrians including bus parking and bus turning areas. The design also included access arrangements for emergency vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists at all new stations within the existing and new propsoed street network. The internal access roads and car park layouts at the OCC and maintenance yards were also designed to facilitate vehicular access as well as the movements of pedestrians and cyclists.

A Highway Design Report was compiled for the Railway Order submission.

Responsible for co-ordination of utility diversions throughout the scheme. Duties included co-ordination with utility companies, preparation of drawings and schedules, and procurement and supervision of utilities survey contract. The design work also included drainage systems for the tunnel, station locations, tunnel portals and control buildings. Information was also provided for the Environmental Impact Statement Report and the the Railway Order submission.

Expert evidence was also provided at the Oral Hearing for the scheme.
