Re-engineering Liveable Communities, Dublin
We were engaged by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to design and implement Covid-19 Mobility Improvements and Public Space Enhancements to the villages of Blackrock, Dundrum and Dalkey.
The project provided an opportunity to reimagine the use of public space in the setting of attractive heritage villages in the county. Placemaking and providing an attractive public space was a core component of this project as they help promote sustainable transport, active mobility and support the local economy.
Interventions involved incorporating planters and street furnishings to help make visiting, going to school or work, shopping and spending time in the villages a safe and enjoyable experience for all. The expanded pedestrian zones also offered opportunities for businesses to use the public realm whilst ensuring safe physical distancing was adhered to.
The changed environment in the villages is transformational: where previously the full length of the streets were linear car parks, the streets now look totally different, it is no longer an unwelcoming place for vulnerable road users and is a pleasant place to be. The removal of a large proportion of through-traffic and traffic calming measures has resulted in a much safer environment for vulnerable road users. The seating has proven very popular for people looking to meet outside.
