River Camac Flood Defence Scheme, Dublin
Flooding
The Camac River rises at Mt Seskin, and flows through Saggart, Clondalkin and Inchicore before it joins the River Liffey. The site of the storage ponds is Corkagh Park. The scheme is required to prevent flooding at Leinster Terrace, Old Nangor Road and the Cherrywood Estate.
The proposed scheme involved the provision of 55,000m3 of off-line flood storage. The construction works included river channel widening, flow control structures (throttles, overflow weirs), storage ponds and landscaping works. The excavated material from the pond was used to construct a landscape feature in the Park. Significant planting works were also undertaken.
We scoped and supervised environmental investigations including archaeology and ecology. These were undertaken both prior to and during the construction phase. The need for monitoring of the Works by a licenced archaeologist was identified. Archaeological finds including fulacht fiadhs, skeletal remains, weapons and pieces of jewelry were found during the construction phase which necessitated modifications to the original design. We coordinated the activities of the archaeological and construction works to try to minimise delays and associated cost overruns.
