Congratulations to the J. B. Barry and Partners Limited, MARISWE and Royal HaskoningDHV team on their recent contract signing for the Lesotho Highlands Water Project PMU!
The Joint Venture team will be collaborating as a Programme Management Unit (PMU) for management, oversight and reporting during the continuing implementation of Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). Phase II of the LHWP will consist of the construction of the Polihali Dam, which will increase the volume of water transferred to South Africa while simultaneously increasing the electricity generated at the ‘Muela hydropower plant – a significant step towards Lesotho’s energy independence. Other aspects of this project will include the 38km Polihali Transfer Tunnel and the 80MW Oxbow Hydropower as well as a multitude of other infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges and construction villages.
Check out the photos below from the completed Phase I of the project, which ultimately involved the construction of impoundment dams at Katse and Mohale in order to store and transfer water to the population centres of Gauteng in South Africa. Transferred water was used to generate electricity to provide for the power demands of Lesotho.
