Limerick Capital Investment Programme, Limerick
EIA Coordination
We were appointed by Irish Water to progress the Limerick CIP project through design, EIAR and planning. The project consists of 2 WWTP (Limerick/Bunlicky and Castletroy) as follows.
Limerick (Bunlicky) Wastewater Treatment Plant
Bunlicky WwTP treats the wastewater from the city of Limerick. It has an organic design loading of 168,000 PE and consists of preliminary treatment, primary treatment and sludge treatment facilities. It is proposed to upgrade the WWTP to treat 285,000PE under Phase 1 (and 325,000PE under Phase 2). Storm storage and sludge treatment facilities are also to be upgraded at the treatment plant and some works will also be required at the main pumping station at Corcanree.
Bunlicky WwTP constitutes Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) as it is ‘development which is of strategic economic or social importance to the state or a region’. It will also require an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as the treatment capacity @ 285,000PE is above the 10,000PE threshold. The EIA Scoping and Appropriate Assessment Screening reports are currently being prepared.
The EIA report (EIAR), Natura Impact Statement (NIS) and Consultation Report will accompany the SID planning application that will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála.
Castletroy Watewater Treatment Plant
Castletroy WwTP was constructed in the early 1990's and is situated three kilometres north east of Limerick city and adjacent to the University of Limerick. It is proposed to upgrade the existing Castletroy WwTP to cater for a 10-year growth period and a design capacity of 77,500 PE.
Castletroy WwTP constitutes Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) as it is ‘development which is of strategic economic or social importance to the state or a region’. It is also deemed Environmental Infrastructure as it has a treatment capacity above 10,000PE, and therefore automatically requires an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). We have completed the EIA Scoping and Appropriate Assessment Screening reports which are available to view on the Irish Water website; water.ie/castletroywwtp.
The detailed EIA report (EIAR) and Natura Impact Statement (NIS) are currently being prepared by J B Barry and our environmental specialists in parallel with the consultation process. The EIAR, NIS, and Consultation Report will accompany the SID planning application that will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála.
